How Do You Show Up?
Life hands us challenges we don’t always want. But it is how we accept and deal with the changes is what makes us the people we are today. If we learn to look at it in a positive way instead of defeat more doors will open for us.
In 2014 I attended a self-development training that changed my life. During the seminar I was always coming in late for the meetings and going on “my” time. I showed up after breaks but usually it was a few minutes late. After taking this for 1 day the leader of the group said to me “is this how you show up for your work and life too? Do you always show up late so you don’t have to be held accountable for anything?” I immediately felt embarrassed and ashamed as everyone in the room was looking at me.
She then proceeded to ask me what I did for a living. I informed her I ran my own little business as virtual assistant. She asked: “do you show up late for work there?” I responded with No. She called me a liar and I got mad. I’m not one to get mad easily but when put on the spot like that I succumbed to it. Again life hands us challenges. How we accept and deal with them changes us.
What happened next changed me. Changed who I was and how I operated my life. She asked me if I liked to take the easy way out of things? I responded with “sometimes.” She responded with “I think all of the time is the appropriate answer.” What she was trying to instill in me was I needed to take responsibility for my actions and my being lazy. See being late is being lazy and not wanting to be held accountable. I understood that.
She then said to me that the reason I wasn’t achieving all of my dreams was because I would get close to the top and then fall backwards or resort to something “easier” and make excuses for why I wasn’t at the top of my business. I was mad, but she was right. That is exactly what I did.
I had dreams of writing a book, doing more with my business, expanding my horizons and so on. None of that was happening. I felt I was at a standstill in my life. She asked me if I was tired of being “stuck” and I said yes.
My eyes were opened wide that weekend after being embarrassed by my tardiness. I went home, got to work, showed up on time since then, have written 2 books, producing a international live radio talk show and working my business.
How do you show up? Might change you once you know.
